Understanding Core-Collapse Supernovae in the Transient Era

I will review the current status of the core-collapse supernovae engine. Many new ideas have been added to the basic convection-enhanced supernovae engine termed "robust" by Colgate in 1994. As we broaden our understanding, new solutions have been uncovered for a wide range of supernovae problems, including the source of the r-process elements. But changing observing strategies have brought about an even greater transformation in our view of supernovae. I will discuss how supernoovae studies will change in this rapidly growing field.
