Why Did I Not Think of That?

Barry Holstein
Univ. of Mass., Amherst

I will review a number of modern ideas in physics which could easily have been discovered long before they actually were. These include the Aharonov-Bohm effect, the Berry phase, quantum mechanical (anomalous) symmetry breaking, chiral perturbation theory, and the effective theory of gravity. In each case I will speculate on why it took so long to understand what is going on -- including my 1969 thesis work on weak nonleptonic interactions of kaons.
