Selected applications of the HFBCS model to nuclear structure and nuclear reactions

After a brief description of the HFBCS model I will discuss three applications to nuclear structure and nuclear reactions: fission and fusion properties inferred from the PES, GS spin and parity of odd nuclei along the valley of beta-stability, and very recently, direct-semidirect neutron capture cross section on 238U. Two adavantages of the model rely on its variational character, enabling to find local minima in one-step calculations, and its self-consistent character, stemming from the density-dependence of the underlying phenomenological effective nucleon-nucleon interaction and enabling to find the optimal single particle potential at the same time as the lowest energy solution. A direct consequence is that the nuclear shape associated with the latter solution is deduced from the calculations, free of any prescribed parametrization. Most of the calculated results, covering a wide range of gross and fine nuclear properties, are found to be in rather good agreement with the experimental data. Some perspectives of possible inputs provided by the HFBCS model to nuclear reactions codes will also be briefly discussed.
