How Strong is Strong? Precision Calculation of alpha_s from Event Shapes

Daniel Kolodrubetz
MIT

Event shapes provide a useful tool for analyzing collider data and can be used to extract a measurement for the strong coupling constant. I will motivate looking at a high precision calculation in Soft Collinear Effective Theory of a particular event shape, C-parameter, and run through the extraction of alpha_s from e+e- collision data. I will also compare this calculation with earlier determinations from event shapes and other methods. The talk will conclude with a discussion of how we can move forward in the area of high precision event shape calculations.
