Incoherent Elastic Scattering





In solids containing hydrogen, such as polyethylene or frozen methane, the strong incoherence of the scattering from hydrogen simplifies the elastic term:

The cross section only depends on the bound scattering cross section and the Debye-Waller coefficient, W, which is computed from the excitation spectrum for the solid. The following shows an example of the elastic (dashed) and inelastic (solid) terms for frozen methane at 20K:
