Probing the Physics of the Neutron Star Crust in Transiently Accreting Systems

Dany Page
Univ. Nacional Autonoma de Mexico

The nature of matter in the core of a neutron star, i.e., at supranuclear densities, is still a mystery, but the structure of the crust at subnuclear densities can be described with some confidence. The recent observational identification of several binary systems with transitory accretion, and the subsequent careful monitoring of the star"s relaxation after a long (several years) outburst has opened the opportunity to study directly the structure and thermal behavior of the neutron star crust. I will describe models of these phenomena and show that one can even be confident and dare to predict the forthcoming (a few years) evolution of the sttar.
