Young 2025 1451 23 18 December 1998 2025 1451 24 2025 1451 25 This evaluation is for photonuclear reactions up to 150 MeV and 2025 1451 26 covers nonelastic reactions proceeding via photon absorption on 2025 1451 27 the nucleus. Elastic photon scattering is not provided due to its 2025 1451 28 very small cross section and small importance in most 2025 1451 29 applications. 2025 1451 30 2025 1451 31 The evaluation provides a complete representation of the 2025 1451 32 nuclear data needed for transport, damage, heating, 2025 1451 33 radioactivity, and shielding applications over the incident 2025 1451 34 photon energy range from 1 to 150 MeV. The evaluation utilizes 2025 1451 35 MF=6, MT=5 to represent all reaction data. Production cross 2025 1451 36 sections and emission spectra are given for neutrons, protons, 2025 1451 37 deuterons, tritons, alpha particles, gamma rays, and all residual 2025 1451 38 nuclides produced (A>5) in the reaction chains. To summarize, the 2025 1451 39 ENDF sections with non-zero data are: 2025 1451 40 2025 1451 41 MF=3 MT= 5 Photoabsorption (total nonelastic) cross section 2025 1451 42 = Sum of binary (g,n) and (g,x) reactions 2025 1451 43 2025 1451 44 MF=6 MT= 5 Production cross sections and energy-angle 2025 1451 45 distributions for emission neutrons, protons, 2025 1451 46 deuterons, tritons, alphas; and angle-integrated 2025 1451 47 spectra for gamma rays and residual nuclei that 2025 1451 48 are stable against particle emission 2025 1451 49 2025 1451 50 The cross sections for (g,1n), (g,2n), (g,3n), (g,1p), (g,2p), 2025 1451 51 etc., are not given explicitly as reactions with MT = 4, 16, 17, 2025 1451 52 103, 111, etc. These cross sections are readily available, 2025 1451 53 however, from the multiplicities tabulated for the various 2025 1451 54 residual nuclei corresponding to the above reactions. Such cross 2025 1451 55 sections are very useful for comparing with experimental data, 2025 1451 56 such as is given in the compilation by Dietrich and Berman 2025 1451 57 (Di88). 2025 1451 58 2025 1451 59 The evaluation is based on nuclear model calculations that have 2025 1451 60 been benchmarked to experimental data, especially for g + 40Ca 2025 1451 61 reactions (Ch98). We use the GNASH code system (Yo92), which 2025 1451 62 utilizes Hauser-Feshbach statistical, preequilibrium and direct- 2025 1451 63 reaction theories. Optical model calculations are used to obtain 2025 1451 64 particle transmission coefficients for the Hauser-Feshbach 2025 1451 65 calculations. An exciton model (modified to account for photon 2025 1451 66 projectiles - see below) of Kalbach is used, including cluster 2025 1451 67 preequilibrium emission (Ka85,Ka77). 2025 1451 68 2025 1451 69 Input parameters for the optical model calculations, level 2025 1451 70 densities, and discrete levels, and gamma-ray strength functions, 2025 1451 71 were similar to those used for our corresponding neutron- 2025 1451 72 induced 150-MeV GNASH calculations, as documented in the 2025 1451 73 corresponding LA150 ENDF file 1. However, a change was made 2025 1451 74 to the level density of the residual nucleus following neutron 2025 1451 75 emission (39Ca), to increase its level density. This was done 2025 1451 76 so that the calculations predict the correct partitioning 2025 1451 77 between neutron and proton emission (experimental data exist 2025 1451 78 for the total absorption cross section, and for neutron emission).2025 1451 79 2025 1451 80 The GNASH code was extended to calculate photonuclear reactions 2025 1451 81 in the following way, described in detail in Ref.(Ch95b). 2025 1451 82 Photoabsorption is modeled through the giant resonance at the 2025 1451 83 lower energies and the quasideuteron (QD) mechanism (Ch91) at 2025 1451 84 higher energies. After the initial interaction, primary and 2025 1451 85 multiple preequilibrium emission of fast particles can occur, 2025 1451 86 followed by sequential Hauser-Feshbach decay. Preequilibrium 2025 1451 87 decay is calculated with an exciton model, based on a 2p1h 2025 1451 88 initial state to approximate correlation effects in the QD 2025 1451 89 mechanism, as proposed by Blann. The equi-probability of neutron 2025 1451 90 and proton excitons following photoabsorption (in contrast to 2025 1451 91 nucleon-induced reactions) is accounted for in the primary and 2025 1451 92 multiple preequilibrium calculations. Full angular momentum and 2025 1451 93 parity conservation is included in a Hauser-Feshbach treatment of 2025 1451 94 equilibrium emission, accounting for the fact that an E1-photon 2025 1451 95 brings in one unit of angular momentum 2025 1451 96 2025 1451 97 A model was developed to calculate the energy distributions of 2025 1451 98 all recoil nuclei in the GNASH calculations - a modification of 2025 1451 99 our theory (Ch96) to include the fact that an incident photon 2025 1451 100 brings in a smaller momentum than a nucleon projectile of the 2025 1451 101 same energy. The recoil energy distributions are represented in 2025 1451 102 the laboratory system in MT=5, MF=6, and are given as isotropic 2025 1451 103 in the lab system. All other data in MT=5,MF=6 are given in the 2025 1451 104 center-of-mass system. This method of representation utilizes 2025 1451 105 the LCT=3 option approved at the November, 1996, CSEWG meeting. 2025 1451 106 2025 1451 107 While angle-integrated spectra are provided for the secondary 2025 1451 108 ejectiles, we intend angular distributions of the light (A<5) 2025 1451 109 particles to be determined by a data processing code such as 2025 1451 110 NJOY. To do this, we provide preequilibrium fractions for the 2025 1451 111 light particles, to facilitate the calculation of angle-energy 2025 1451 112 correlated double-differential spectra. For preequilibrium 2025 1451 113 emission of A<5 ejectiles, such a calculation could make use of 2025 1451 114 the theory of Chadwick et al. (Ch95a), which modifies Kalbach's 2025 1451 115 angular distribution systematics for incident photons. For the 2025 1451 116 A<5 ejectiles emitted through mechanisms other than 2025 1451 117 preequilibrium (equilibrium decay or direct emission), the NJOY 2025 1451 118 code could assume isotropy, or account for the fact that 2025 1451 119 experimental data often show emission in the GDR energy region to 2025 1451 120 have a dipole shape, peaked at 90 degrees. 2025 1451 121 2025 1451 122 The GNASH code's ability to model photonuclear reactions has 2025 1451 123 been tested in a number of works (Ch91,Ch94,Ch95a,Ch95b), where 2025 1451 124 comparisons against experimental data were shown (Al64,Be87,Br66, 2025 1451 125 Bl73,Di88,Fu85,Le81,Le82,Ve70,Yo72). This involved tests of 2025 1451 126 calculated photoneutron reaction channels (g,1n), (g,2n), (g,3n), 2025 1451 127 etc., as well as the photoneutron production (g,xn) cross 2025 1451 128 section, photoneutron emission spectra, and photoneutron 2025 1451 129 multiplicities (yields) up to 150 MeV. The multiplicities are 2025 1451 130 useful for indirectly validating our preequilibrium modeling, 2025 1451 131 since they are strongly influenced by preequilibrium reactions. 2025 1451 132 While experimental data often exist for total neutron production, 2025 1451 133 they rarely exist for the emission spectra. Thus a model code 2025 1451 134 such as GNASH is essential for providing emission spectra data 2025 1451 135 information, after it has been validated against measured cross 2025 1451 136 section data. 2025 1451 137 2025 1451 138 SPECIFIC INFORMATION ON THE G+40CA EVALUATION 2025 1451 139 2025 1451 140 Available data are summarized by Varlamov (Va96). 2025 1451 141 2025 1451 142 The photoabsorption cross section was evaluated based on the 2025 1451 143 data of Ahrens (Ah75,85), that extend up to 150 MeV. At 60 MeV, 2025 1451 144 the value for the absorption cross section was consistent 2025 1451 145 with that used by Ryckbosch et al. (Ry90). 2025 1451 146 2025 1451 147 The total photoabsorption cross section is used as an input 2025 1451 148 into the GNASH calculations. These calculations then predict 2025 1451 149 the branching to photoneutron, photoproton, etc. emission. 2025 1451 150 The calculated photoneutron production was compared with 2025 1451 151 measurements of Veyssiere (Vy74). The calculations, after 2025 1451 152 a level density adjustment for 39Ca, predicted the (g,xn) 2025 1451 153 data well, with the exception of the 25-30 MeV region where 2025 1451 154 the calculated photoneutron production appears to be about 2025 1451 155 20% too high. 2025 1451 156 2025 1451 157 Measurements (Ry90) of the inclusive photoproton spectra for 2025 1451 158 62 MeV Ca(g,xp) at 90-degrees provide a useful test of the 2025 1451 159 preequilibrium emission following quasideuteron absorption. 2025 1451 160 These spectrum data are some of the very few for essentially 2025 1451 161 monochromatic photons. The calculations, in the preequilibrium 2025 1451 162 region, agree very well with the measurements. This is 2025 1451 163 important since the comparison tests not only the 2025 1451 164 preequilibrium model, but also the angular distribution 2025 1451 165 systematics (Ch95a).
